This stretch of the Salmon River is called The Lower Salmon Gorge. Hammer Creek to Heller Bar is the typical run. It is a free flowing river full of big pools and drops. With canyon desert topography and white sand beaches, it is class 3 and 4.
At high water, 20,000 cfs, Slide rapid makes the river unfloatable with non commercial boats.
Pine Bar is an option, located 12 miles downstream from Hammer Creek. There is a concrete ramp there. American Bar is 7 miles further with no ramp, but access to the river if you have 4 wheel drive. Even with 4 wheel drive, several people have gotten stuck. There is no guarantee you can come out of there without a tow, so please understand this!! Eagle Creek will not be open til spring/summer of 2024 and NO TRAILERS – It is not really a road, more of a path, and it is not maintained. If you decide to self shuttle on this road, please make sure you have good spare tires. Expect to drive about 2-3 mph on this path. Also know that your vehicles will definately get scratched up.
Please call me toll free at 208-839-2308 to discuss the many options there are to get your float miles in. There are various launch sites upstream from Hammer Creek.
Please be mindful of the speed in Asotin. It is 35 mph out of Heller Bar, and 25 mph in Asotin.
SCAT Machine located in Asotin.
I no longer get Discover Passes for people as the stores in Washington are unreliable. Please purchase the Annual Pass online. We have wifi and you can use our phone as there is no cell service is White Bird.
Hammer to Heller: 250.00 Add 3% for credit cards.
Pine Bar/American Bar – Heller Bar Price: $300
If you have a fishing or hunting license from Washington state, you should have a vehicle pass. The annual Discover pass is good from the month purchased that year til the next year, example August 2019-Aug 2020. I cannot shuttle the day you come out, nor be locked into that date, so buying the one day pass will not work. I will have the vehicle there for you early as it will be to your benefit.
Put In: Corn Creek
Take Outs: Vinegar/Carey/Spring Bar/Shorts Bar/Riggins/Lucile/Slate Creek/Hammer Creek
- Shuttle Length: 380 miles
- River Length: 82 Miles
- Permit Season: June 20th – September 7
When we get your vehicles from the put in, we immediately check to make sure the vehicle and trailer is road worthy.
The 40 miles it takes to get to the US 93 north is rough and rocky. Often a trailer with weight is a different animal than when it’s light. Some bounce like rubber balls even at slow speeds.
If there is a problem with your bearings or tires, there are several places along the way that can fix what you need.
Often times, there is no charge to you to fix it, but if there is, you pay that with no additional mark up. Please no doughnut spares. If you have AWD, and you have a doughnut spare this would mean that we would have to get it towed to the Les Schwab tire center and have 4 tires replaced.
This is a standard policy with Les Schwab and All Rivers as a used or new tire with different wear would compromise your sensors and can run into the thousands of dollars to fix. Please have great tires as this run translates into about 4 hours of dirt roads, washboards rocks, serious potholes and everything you would expect gnarly dirt roads to be.
Put In: Boundary Creek/Marsh Creek/Indian Creek
Take Outs: Cache Bar/Carey Creek/ Spring Bar/ Riggins / all the way down the Salmon the more you come down the cheaper the shuttle is.
- Shuttle Length: 215 miles
- River Length: 100 Miles
- Permit Season: May 28-September 3rd
If you are lucky enough to get a permit for the Middle Fork of the Salmon River, congrats!
It is considered the ultimate rafting trip in North America. Steeped with history and beauty, it also has 6 hot springs down this section.
Because of it’s technicality, if you are not a skilled rafter or kayaker, it is recommended that you hire a raft company for your trip.
It’s been our experience that if the water levels are extremely high or low, or the road is closed due to snow you may want to put in at Indian Creek.
Since it’s only accessible by air, you would need to charter an air taxi. It is not uncommon for us to pick up cars at the McCall Airport and deliver them to Cache Bar. Please call for rates, and of course any other info. You can also launch at State Highway 21, float from Marsh Creek where it becomes the Middle Fork.
For additional information, call the Public Lands Center in Salmon at 208-756-5100, or contact the local Ranger District offices. You are welcome to visit website at: www.fs.usda.gov/main/scnf/home.

Put In: Pittsburg Landing
Take Out: Heller Bar
- Shuttle Length: 137 from Pittsburg
- River Length: 79 Miles (Dam to Heller Bar)
- Pittsburgh Landing to Heller Bar: 50
Permit Season: May 30-September 10th
We shuttle from Pittsburgh Landing to Heller Bar only!. If you want to book a shuttle for Hells Canyon Dam to either Pittsburgh Landing or Heller Bar, I can recommend Hells Canyon Shuttle. They have been providing shuttles for 30 years and they are very reliable, with a full service store, fuel, campground AND a safe parking lot for your vehicle storage.
Call 800-785-3358 for this run, or visit their website!!
The road into Pittsburgh is a road you will not forget. Twisted and curved, with blind corners and narrow and it is not paved. Although it is 17 miles, it will take you about 45 minutes to arrive there. We are cautious not to over use your brakes on this road as it is one of the steepest canyons in N. America.
Put In: Mouth of the Sesech River
Take Outs: Vinegar Creek / Carey Creek or on down the line! Mo River – Mo Better .. pricing
- Shuttle Length: 109 miles one way (4 hours)
- River Length: 58 miles Class V (IV) at low water.
Permit Season: All Summer, but you must call 208-634-0400 to get a permit as there is a red tag you need on the Main Salmon.
This is a remote river, but well worth it for kayakers and floaters with self bailing boats. . The shuttle road is often blocked by snow until mid-June. High water normally lasts through late May and most of June. Wet suits a good idea..
Permit Information
Boaters floating the South Fork Salmon River and exiting onto the Wild Section of the Main Salmon must obtain a tributary permit before floating. South Fork floaters will need to contact the Krassel Ranger District for permit information at 208-634-0616. They are free and easy to get.
